Since Raf Simons's early years as a fashion designer certain garments have become hallmarks of the brand, acting as timeless points of reference across his collections. Raf's subversive take on the classic Perfecto jacket is one of these pieces, underscoring the originality of his vision. First introduced for A/W 97, the design has been re-issued almost every season that followed in a variety of fabrics and materials (pictured: A/W 98 and S/S 04). Being part of the Raf by Raf Simons S/S 06 diffusion line, this version has been produced under completely different conditions from Raf Simons's main brand. Still, its craftsmanship and detailing are of the same high standard as mainline pieces.
The design is a re-work of the Perfecto that introduces new proportions and shapes to create a sophisticated streetwear piece. Several authentic biker features are maintained, such as the asymmetric zipper closure and the large collar that secures with snap buttons. At the same time, the details make the piece quintessentially Simons: numerous zipped pockets on the front combine visual interest with practicality, while the buckle straps on the waist have been reversed and enlarged. Likewise, the long zippers on the cuffs have been placed towards the front of the hand to create a subtly aggressive look. The directional design features Simons's iconic narrow-shouldered cut, with long slim sleeves and a slightly elongated body. The fabric is a textured seersucker cotton with soft, cushioned texture that has been overdyed for a deep colour finish.
An abundance of interesting features adds further depth to the piece. The left sleeve is finished with a small patch pocket inspired by MA-2 bomber jackets, while the back features a triangular yoke construction that evokes 1970s designs. All hardware has an antique bronze/gunmetal finish that subtly complements the dark aesthetic of the piece. The zippers are Italian-made Raccagni (RY) and feature large metal pulls. The interior is fully lined in textured herringbone cotton and features a single chest pocket. Overall, all seams are pristinely executed throughout and give a luxurious substance to the directional design.
This is a beautiful garment that is simultaneously classic and avant-garde, capturing Raf Simons's idiosyncratic menswear that is informed by the past but looks boldly towards the future. Its authentic biker features make it easy to style and wear, while its beautiful details set it apart from common designs. Strongly reccomended.
